Editor’s Note: Seven of the top gardens in the Lowcountry were showcased as part of the 2019 All Saints Garden Tour. LOCAL Life is featuring each garden through images captured by photographer Maddie Terry. This month is the garden of Peggy Parker on Myrtle Island.

The experiences of being born and raised in Charleston and living and gardening in other inland and coastal areas, motivated this gardener to purchase her “diamond in the rough” home on Myrtle Island in 2010. While her garden creations are a culmination of a lifetime of design and growing lessons, she was inspired mostly by her childhood memories. The formal gardens at the entrance and small courtyard are based on the downtown Charleston gardens she peeked into on summer evening strolls with her grandmother. Casual gardens in the back recreate a setting for the many outdoor activities she enjoyed growing up on the water. The May River provides a stunning backdrop for several garden “rooms” designed for swimming, cooking, entertaining and quietly enjoying nature.
