Ascending beyond first-class
Private jet travel has evolved from an exclusive luxury for the ultra-wealthy to a more accessible travel option.
Story by Sheila Paz
Imagine a world where luggage never goes missing and TSA lines are a thing of the past. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? In the realm of air travel, chartering a private jet represents the zenith of luxury and exclusivity. We sat down with Andy Meers from MAVCO Jet Charters, an aircraft-rental service on Hilton Head Island, to explore the benefits of private air travel.
The Gulfstream G800 is a highly efficient aircraft that can fly long distances at high speeds. It offers top-notch cabin technology and comfort, including ergonomic seats, a high-definition circadian lighting system, a plasma-ionization air purification system and large windows. The cabin can accommodate up to 19 passengers and offers multiple living areas.
Takeoff on your terms
Foremost, private flying offers unmatched convenience and privacy. Forget the bustling crowds and security lines of typical airports — not to mention the anxiety over misplaced baggage. With private charters, a car takes you right to your aircraft, ensuring you’re airborne swiftly and effortlessly. The best part? Your schedule is completely flexible. Whether you need to depart last-minute or prefer not to arrive hours before takeoff, private flights cater to your needs. Andy ensures his jets are ready an hour before departure, significantly reducing any delays related to maintenance. Should a delay occur, guests are informed before they even leave their homes.
Boundless luxuries
Once you’re aboard the luxury of private flying unfolds in endless abundance. Each journey promises tranquility, with spacious cabins crafted for ultimate comfort and elegance. Feeling hungry mid-flight? Move beyond standard airline snacks. When flying private, culinary options know no bounds — from Johnnie Walker Blue on the rocks to freshly prepared filet mignon, your gastronomic wishes are fulfilled. Andy shared a memorable experience where his team transformed a jet into a festive venue for a family attending a Taylor Swift concert in Los Angeles — showcasing the boundless customization available. Moreover, jets like the Gulfstream G700 and G800 even offer onboard showers, allowing guests to arrive refreshed and ready for their next adventure.
Direct routes
One of the most significant benefits of private aviation is the ability to travel directly from point A to point B — say goodbye to inconvenient layovers in busy hubs like Atlanta or Charlotte. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to jet from Hilton Head directly to St. Maarten without stopping in Miami? Private charters offer closer landing options to your destination, reducing the need for lengthy ground transportation. This convenience is perfect for anyone needing to visit multiple locations quickly, like business executives, allowing more time for family or work.
Pet-friendly skies
Traveling with pets? Private jets provide a stress-free and comfortable experience for your animal companions. Unlike commercial flights, there’s no need for separate cargo arrangements. Andy noted that one of his clients regularly travels with her three dogs, two bunnies and two cats from Boca Raton to Martha’s Vineyard.
Ultimate air travel
Private flying epitomizes personal luxury and convenience, delivering stress-free journeys with lavish amenities. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, it’s about enjoying each moment in relaxed elegance. Private jets act as time-savers, connecting you to destinations that would otherwise be challenging with commercial air travel. Ready to take flight? The price of privacy
The cost to charter a private jet can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of aircraft, distance of the flight, length of the trip and additional services requested. Here’s a rough breakdown of the costs:
Aircraft type: Smaller jets (light jets) are usually cheaper, starting around $2,000 to $3,000 per flight hour. Mid-size jets can range from $3,000 to $6,000 per hour, while large or heavy jets, which offer more space and luxury, can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 per flight hour.
Flight distance and duration: The longer the flight and the more fuel required, the higher the cost. For example, a short one-hour flight on a light jet might cost around $2,500 per hour, while a cross-country flight in the U.S. on a heavy jet could cost upwards of $30,000 per hour.
Trip length: For round trips where the plane can return empty, you may only pay for the time in the air. However, if the plane has to stay and wait for you or return to pick you up, additional costs for crew accommodation, landing fees and aircraft parking might be charged.
Additional costs: Catering, ground transportation, in-flight amenities and sometimes even de-icing in colder climates can add to the total cost. International flights might also incur higher fees due to international handling and additional operational charges.
Empty legs: If you can book an “empty leg” flight, where the jet is repositioning or returning empty from a previously booked charter, you can save significantly, sometimes up to 75 percent off the regular charter cost.
