This island, located near the entrance of the Charleston Harbor, rang with gun shots in both the Revolutionary War and American Civil War. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo rocked the island by flipping the bridge that connects it to the mainland upside down. Today, it’s hard to believe the peaceful two-and-a-half-mile beach peppered with various public beach accesses once faced such difficulty. It’s the perfect destination for a hot, lazy dog day of summer.
