Operation R&R is a nonprofit charity dedicated to serving military families and Gold Star families whose members have sacrificed extended time apart from loved ones, been injured, or have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Started in 2008 on Hilton Head Island, Operation R&R has brought more than 1,700 deserving military families to spend a free week’s stay on Hilton Head Island. The military families almost exclusively come from the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield.
Who it Helps
Operation R&R’s goals are to provide a stress-free opportunity for families to reconnect and reintegrate back into some sort of normalcy after usually multiple worldwide deployments without their immediate families. In the case of Gold Star families, the charity offers time to reflect and heal as a result of their spouse or child suffering the ultimate sacrifice.
How to Help
All money raised by Operation R&R comes from personal donations, fundraising activities and local company donations. The various means of helping this local charity are personal donations to its address or on its website, orrus.org. They are always actively looking for owners to donate use of their properties (September through April) for placing military families. Operation R&R pays for cleaning fees. Residents also can offer their time as greeters, which are assigned to meet the military families when they drive to the island and to escort them to their properties, provide the pre-made gift bags each family receives, and to be the contact point for the families with any questions they might have.
