Pantone 2023 Color of the Year: Viva Magenta
Story by Julia White
The Pantone Color Institute’s Color of the Year for 2023 is Viva Magenta (18-1750), a nuanced crimson red tone that presents a balance between warm and cool. The global color authority reveals its Color of the Year every December to reflect the latest trends across sectors including fashion, beauty, technology, design and home decor.
“As virtual worlds become a more prominent part of our daily lives, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Color Institute’s executive director. “Viva Magenta descends from the red family and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family, as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known. Rooted in the primordial, Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
Pantone’s 2023 color trend palettes
Pantone released two color trend palettes for 2023: a bold and innovative spring and summer palette of 10 shades and five shades of quiet neutrals called the Core Classics. “As we anticipate our future, we are embracing the freedom to colorfully express our individuality without constraint,” Eiseman said. “Experiencing a creative liberation that transgresses previous norms, we are adapting and inventing novel pairings and contrasting harmonies.”
