Salt Therapy Benefits: Halotherapy, Himalayan Salt Scrubs and Lowcountry Wellness
From scrubs to halotherapy, salt delivers head-to-toe benefits
Story by Belle Whitfield
Salt is at the heart of the Lowcountry. You notice it in the humid air on a summer afternoon and taste it after a walk on the beach. It’s in the movement of the tides and the gentle ritual of a bath soak. These days, salt is shifting from being part of the scenery to playing a key role in wellness. People are turning to this ancient mineral as a simple, powerful way to care for themselves.
The ritual of the soak
Before modern spas, people turned to the ocean for healing. The idea that ocean water helps us feel better is more than just a fond memory. Minerals like magnesium, potassium and calcium, along with the water’s natural buoyancy, help relax muscles and calm the mind. Even a quick swim in the sea can clear away stress after a busy week.
At home, people bring the feeling of the sea into their daily routines. Using salt scrubs and bath soaks is more than exfoliating. It is a way to slow down and relax. “Himalayan salt is one of those elements that does not need to be complicated to be effective,” says Deb Durrant, owner of Moor Spa Hilton Head. Rubbing mineral-rich salts into your skin boosts circulation and helps your skin renew itself, delivering important minerals like magnesium and bromide that support hydration.
The power of the glow
Experts at Moor Spa Hilton Head say the type of salt you use matters. Their Himalayan crystal salt comes from marine deposits more than 250 million years old. Instead of being processed by machines, it is hand-extracted to preserve its natural qualities.
“We’ve chosen to incorporate it in a way that feels authentic to our work. People notice the difference, not just in how they relax, but in how they feel afterward. It stays with them,” Durrant says.
In a “Salt Glow” treatment, which exfoliates the entire body, salt helps detoxify the skin. Its high level of negative ions may help counterbalance cell-damaging positive ions. For people with dry or flaky skin, a mineral-rich salt massage leaves skin feeling refreshed long after the treatment.
These treatments are offered alongside stone massages and detoxifying hand-and-foot therapies that incorporate Himalayan salt into each session. During treatment a gentle warmth eases muscle tension and enhances the overall therapeutic effect.
The glow effect
A full-body “salt glow” scrub at Moor Spa Hilton Head gently exfoliates and revitalizes the skin, leaving it smooth, refreshed and renewed. Equal parts relaxing and energizing, this treatment brings a natural, mineral-rich reset from head to toe.

The halotherapy escape
Salt can help the skin, but breathing it in offers another kind of relief. Halotherapy, or salt therapy, has become a popular way to support respiratory health in the Lowcountry. At Pure Salt Studios on Hilton Head Island, relaxation begins the moment you step into a room made entirely of Himalayan salt, from the glowing walls to the soft salt beneath your feet.
“You step in, and you’re not sure what to expect, and the second you walk in, you feel a sense of relief,” says owner Lindsay Sales.
During a 45-minute session, a halogenerator releases pharmaceutical-grade salt particles into the air. These tiny particles travel deep into the lungs and sinuses, helping to clear congestion and remove irritants. This can be especially beneficial during the Lowcountry’s heavy pollen and allergy seasons.
The experience is what you make of it. The room welcomes anyone looking to decompress, offering eight zero-gravity chairs for deep relaxation or even a quick nap. For the full effect, guests are encouraged to leave screens and devices outside, allowing for a completely uninterrupted 45-minute reset.
Beyond respiratory benefits, there is also a focus on skin health. “The more skin that’s exposed, the more benefits you’ll receive,” Sales says, noting that salt particles that are not inhaled settle onto the skin, acting as a natural anti-inflammatory. Wearing comfortable clothing such as shorts and a T-shirt allows the salt to better hydrate and cleanse the skin.
Moor Spa and Pure Salt Studios reflect the Hilton Head way of life. In today’s busy world, these spaces offer a rare chance to step away from daily distractions and the pull of the digital world. It is an intentional pause, giving people of all ages a chance to slow down and find balance in a calming, mineral-rich environment.
Breathe easy
Step inside Pure Salt Studios on Hilton Head Island, and settle into a quiet, glowing sanctuary designed to mimic the restorative power of salty sea air. During a halotherapy session, ultra-fine, dry salt particles are gently dispersed into the room, reaching deep into the lungs to help clear congestion, reduce inflammation and support the body’s natural defenses.

- 1/2 cup carrier oil, such as jojoba or coconut
- 5-8 drops essential oil (lavender for relaxation or eucalyptus for a spa-like scent)

Detox bath soak
Mix 2 cups of Himalayan salt with 1 cup of Epsom salt.
Pour into a warm bath, and soak for at least 20 minutes to allow your skin to absorb the minerals and help your body relax.
Choosing your salts
Himalayan crystal salt
Great for exfoliating and detox baths. Contains more than 80 trace minerals that help restore skin balance.
Epsom salt
Ideal for muscle soaks. A classic option for easing tension and promoting relaxation.
Pharmaceutical-grade salt
Best for respiratory support. This ultra-fine salt is designed for inhalation and can help clear congestion.
A softer glow
Himalayan salt lamps have become a staple in wellness spaces, thanks to their warm, amber light and calming presence. While claims that they purify the air or release significant negative ions are not strongly supported by scientific evidence, their real benefit may be simpler. The soft, low light can help create a more relaxing environment, especially in the evening when harsh lighting feels out of place.
Used as ambient lighting, a salt lamp can signal the body to wind down, much like candlelight or a shaded lamp. In a bedroom, reading nook or quiet corner, it adds a gentle glow that encourages rest and reflection. Think of it less as a health device and more as a mood-setter. In the Lowcountry, where slowing down is part of the lifestyle, that may be benefit enough.
