How Many Ways Can You Play Quints Line 3 on the 2026 NMJL Card?

One hand on the 2026 National Mah Jongg League card offers far more possibilities than it might seem at first glance.

The third line in the Quints section is worth 40 points and allows players to select two numbers in one suit, along with opposite Dragons. That flexibility makes it one of the most versatile hands on the card.

But exactly how many combinations are possible?

Mahjong instructor Jennifer Kenwell of Pink Palmetto Mahjong challenges you to calculate the answer.

The answer

The correct answer is C: more than 100 options.

More precisely, Quints Line 3 can be played 216 different ways.

How do you get 216 combinations?

Start with the numbers.

There are 36 different ways to select two numbers from 1 through 9. Those two numbers can then be played in any of the three numbered suits: Craks, Bams or Dots.

The hand also requires opposite Dragons. Because each numbered suit has two possible off-suit Dragons, every number-and-suit combination creates two additional possibilities.

The calculation is:

36 number combinations × 3 suits × 2 opposite-Dragon choices = 216 possible hands

That is an impressive amount of flexibility from a single line on the card.

What are opposite Dragons in American Mahjong?

Each Dragon is associated with a numbered suit:

  • Red Dragons correspond with Craks
  • Green Dragons correspond with Bams
  • White Dragons, commonly called Soaps, correspond with Dots

An opposite Dragon does not correspond with the numbered suit being used in the hand.

If your numbers are Craks, for example, the opposite Dragons could be Green Dragons or Soaps. If your numbers are Bams, the opposite Dragons could be Red Dragons or Soaps. With Dots, the opposite choices are Red or Green Dragons.

Always read the complete line and its parenthetical instructions before committing to a hand.

Why Quints Line 3 is so versatile

The line does not restrict players to a particular pair of numbers or one specific suit. It also offers two possible opposite-Dragon choices for each numbered suit.

That does not mean every version will be equally practical during a game. Your tiles and available Jokers still determine whether the hand is a realistic direction.

The value of the line is the number of ways it can work. Instead of searching for one exact combination, players can evaluate the numbers, suit and Dragons already developing on their rack.

The Mahjong takeaway

The most useful information on the NMJL card is not always found in the tile pattern alone. The directions in parentheses can completely change how flexible a hand is.

Quints Line 3 may look intimidating, but its 216 possible combinations make it a hand worth remembering when your rack contains strong multiples, useful Dragons and the Jokers needed to complete the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Does Quints Line 3 require consecutive numbers?
