At Farmer Blue in Seabrook, floral designer Kim Epley approaches arrangements with an eye for balance, movement and open space. Those same principles can guide an entire tablescape. Rather than treating flowers as the finishing touch, let them inspire the atmosphere, colors and decorative details of a gathering.
1. Let the flowers set the mood
Start with a feeling. Decide whether the gathering should feel relaxed, romantic, playful or formal before choosing the details.
2. Build around a favorite bloom
Find your inspiration. Build the table around one favorite element, whether it’s a patterned linen, a beautiful flower or a meaningful object.

3. Layer floral centerpieces and bud vases
Play with scale. Pair a larger centerpiece with smaller bud vases, varying heights and shapes to create interest without overwhelming the table.
4. Carry floral colors throughout the tablescape
Repeat with purpose. Carry a few colors, textures or metallic finishes throughout the setting to create a cohesive look.
5. Keep centerpieces conversation-friendly
Take a seat. Check sightlines, and make sure guests have enough room for plates, glasses, food and conversation.
