This month brings a wave of new coffee shops, bakeries, food trucks and dessert destinations, along with restaurant expansions, national honors and community milestones. Whether you’re looking for your next favorite bite or simply keeping up with what’s new, here’s a taste of the latest happenings from around the region.

What began as a path toward healing has grown into one of the area’s newest home-based bakeries. Stephanie Skager founded Dawsey Boy Bakes after discovering the therapeutic power of sourdough while grieving the loss of her young son. Today her handcrafted loaves are available at Rollers Wine & Spirits, Nantucket Meat & Fish Market and Piggly Wiggly, or by direct order for local pickup.

Comfort food is hitting the road. American Munchies is a locally owned food truck serving smash burgers, hot dogs, wings, loaded sides and other crowd-pleasing favorites. Owners Adam Julian and Alexandra Abrahamowicz-Pettry bring their passion for great food to stops around Hilton Head.

Bluffton has a sweet new gathering spot. Scoop & Sip opened in Berkeley Place Shopping Center on Buckwalter, offering soft serve, 24 flavors of premium hard ice cream, sundaes, banana splits, shakes and floats in a colorful, retro-inspired setting. Freshly brewed coffee, cold brew, sodas and juices round out the menu, with dairy-free, gluten-free and sugar-free options available for every craving.

A meal at Skull Creek Boathouse now comes with an even sweeter ending. The popular waterfront restaurant opened a walk-up ice cream window outside the restaurant, serving frozen treats daily from noon to 10 p.m. Perfect for grabbing a scoop before a sunset stroll.

The former Melrose Beach Club has been reimagined as Corakko Beach Club Restaurant & Bar. Overlooking the beach on Avenue of Oaks, the relaxed waterfront spot serves burgers, seafood baskets, cocktails, beer and wine. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday.

Authentic Mexican street food has rolled into Hardeeville.Ranchito Escondido is serving made-to-order tacos, burritos, tortas, gorditas, sopes and other traditional favorites from its food truck on Whyte Hardee Boulevard, bringing fresh flavors and family recipes to the community.

Burleys Bakery Pop-ups in Beaufort

Small-batch baking is taking center stage at Burleys Bakery. The pop-up bakery specializes in naturally leavened sourdough, handcrafted bagels and chewy cookies, with weekly appearances at Okatie River Farms on Saturdays. Customers can place orders for convenient local pickup.


Culver's - Bluffton, SC

231 Buckwalter Place Blvd., Bluffton

Bluffton’s first Culver’s is expected to open Oct. 19. Located near Publix in Buckwalter Place, the popular Wisconsin-based chain will bring its famous ButterBurgers, fresh frozen custard, crinkle-cut fries and cheese curds to southern Beaufort County. The restaurant is expected to create 80 to 100 local jobs.

A new drive-thru coffee stop could be headed to Lady’s Island. Ellianos Coffee is exploring plans for a location at 91 Sea Island Parkway, bringing its double-sided drive-thru, handcrafted espresso drinks, smoothies and signature energy refreshers to Beaufort County. If approved, the café would mark another step in the rapidly growing southeastern chain’s expansion across South Carolina.

Sixth-generation Gullah native, chef and cookbook author Sallie Ann Robinson has been inducted into the James Beard Foundation Book Awards Hall of Fame, one of the culinary world’s highest honors. Robinson received the recognition at the foundation’s Media Awards in Chicago for her lifelong dedication to preserving and celebrating the food, stories and traditions of the Gullah Geechee people. Through her acclaimed cookbooks, educational programs and decades of advocacy, she introduced authentic Gullah cuisine to audiences around the world while helping ensure its history, culture and culinary traditions are preserved for generations to come.
