Mango Relish Recipe: Sweet, Spicy and Perfect for Summer Grilling

With citrus, pepper jelly and just the right kick of heat, this colorful relish is made for summer tables

Every cook has that one recipe. The dish friends request by name, the one that shows up at every gathering and the one they can make without a second thought. Our Signature Dish feature celebrates those standouts, spotlighting a favorite from someone in the local community each month. After sharing their recipe and the story behind it, they pass the baton by nominating the next cook to keep the chain going. This month’s recipe comes from Babbie Guscio, owner of The Store in Old Town Bluffton. She was nominated by Bess Soper, owner of Bess’ Delicatessen & Catering.

Best ways to serve it

Babbie Guscio’s mango relish is the kind of recipe that earns a permanent spot in the refrigerator because it works with nearly everything.

  • Seared swordfish: The relish cuts through the rich, meaty texture of swordfish beautifully.
  • Grilled mahi-mahi: Spoon it over flaky fish fresh off the grill for a bright tropical finish.
  • Blackened shrimp tacos: The cool sweetness balances smoky spices beautifully.
  • Pork tenderloin: A perfect contrast to rich, juicy pork.
  • Turkey sandwiches: Adds a fresh pop of flavor in place of ordinary condiments.
  • Cream cheese and crackers: An easy appetizer that feels effortless but impressive.
  • Fish tacos: Pile it high for extra color, texture and citrusy brightness.
  • Grilled chicken: A simple way to make weeknight dinners feel more special.
  • Rice bowls: Adds freshness and a little sweet heat to grain bowls and summer lunches.

Mango Relish

Babbie Guscio
This month’s signature dish comes from Babbie Guscio, who proves that the simplest recipes are often the ones people remember most. Bright, fresh and carrying just the right amount of heat, her mango relish brings instant life to everything it touches, from grilled fish and roasted pork to wraps, sandwiches and summer appetizers.
“I like the mango relish best because it is quick and gives a zip to sandwiches, grilled fish — almost anything,” Guscio says.
That effortless versatility is exactly what makes this recipe a standout. Sweet mango mingles with juicy citrus, crisp green onion and a gentle kick of pepper jelly and cayenne, creating a balance of flavors that feels both refreshing and bold. It comes together in minutes but tastes like something far more special. It’s the kind of recipe guests ask about after one bite and the kind you find yourself making again and again all summer long.
