Parents may have already noticed: morning drop-offs at Hilton Head Island High School (HHIHS) look a little different this year. With the completion of the first phase of Beaufort County School District’s (BCSD) multi-step renovation of the campus, including the opening of a cutting-edge three-story academic building, this school year marks the beginning of a new chapter for the district. As the Lowcountry population rises, BCSD is committed to growing alongside it, bringing in new opportunities for students while preserving what makes HHIHS a top-performing school in the region.
For Principal Steven Schidrich, the new facility represents an investment in where Hilton Head Island is headed.
“As our community continues to grow, this new facility provides the space and resources needed to meet the evolving needs of our students while supporting continued academic excellence and innovation,” he says. “We are excited about what this means not only for our current students, but for future generations of the HHI community.”

Expanded Programs at Hilton Head Island High School
Through the campus’ expansion, HHIHS can now accommodate not only more students but more specialized learning opportunities. Assistant Principal Margherita Haldenwang says new programs will help students realize their interests and prepare for their futures.
“Whether students are pursuing advanced coursework, career and technical education pathways, fine arts, athletics or extracurricular activities, they will find opportunities to discover their passions and develop the skills needed for future success,” she says.
A highlight is the upcoming addition of a Health Science Lab and a Culinary Arts classroom, two fields that are especially relevant to our local economy. These hands-on experiences will support individual students as they prepare for graduation and, in turn, the next generation of the Hilton Head Island workforce.

Collaborative Learning Spaces Designed for Student Success
The new campus also reflects a commitment to building a more cooperative, connected community through its design. Features like Socratic seminar circles, collaborative learning spaces and more inclusive architecture encourage students to gather and grow together.
“Collaboration is at the heart of our vision for teaching and learning,” Schidrich says. “The new spaces will encourage students to work together, communicate effectively and learn from one another while developing the skills needed for college, careers and life beyond high school.”
Teachers, too, will feel the benefits of HHIHS’ reimagined architecture. Collaborative spaces grant teachers greater opportunities to work across disciplines, share ideas and develop learning experiences that challenge and excite their students. To Schidrich, these improvements match the quality of the school’s staff and faculty.
“Many of our educators have dedicated decades of service to our school community, and they have consistently created exceptional learning experiences regardless of the facilities they had available,” he says. “It is incredibly rewarding to know they will now have learning environments that reflect their professionalism, creativity and commitment to students.”

Strengthening Hilton Head Island High School’s Community Connections
A strong school doesn’t exist in isolation, and the new campus makes it easier for HHIHS to interact with the wider community.
More flexible multipurpose spaces allow the school to host events such as the Family Connections Expo, Career Day and College Fairs. These gatherings give students meaningful opportunities to meet professionals, explore colleges and careers and connect with resources that can help shape their futures.
Above all, Haldenwang says this interconnection between the campus and the community at large will strengthen students’ sense of belonging.
“We strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where students are encouraged to grow not only as learners, but also as individuals,” she says.
What’s Next for the Hilton Head Island High School Renovation
With a fresh look and a new year underway, HHIHS is reimagined to support Beaufort County as a whole. Its ongoing renovation, expanding to provide greater academic, extracurricular and collaborative opportunities, will continue to enrich the lives of its students as they develop their skills and connect with the community around them. While the building may be getting all the attention now, Schidrich promises it’s only the beginning.
“This transition represents more than a new building – it is an investment in our people and in the bright future of our community.”
