Just beyond the back porch, life at the 2024 Southern Living Idea House spills gracefully outdoors. Thoughtfully crafted by Dillard-Jones Builders and a team of South Carolina vendors and designers, the home’s connection to nature extends seamlessly into its surroundings. It is a place where mornings stretch long, evenings glow golden, and the rhythm of the Lowcountry takes over completely.
Gather ’round
Anchored beneath the canopy of a centuries- old oak, the patio feels like a natural extension of the home. Deep club chairs circle a sculptural fire bowl, offering the perfect spot for sunset gatherings or quiet conversation under the stars. A mix of teak, stone and greenery brings balance to the space, while smooth pavers add a clean, coastal finish. Lush native plantings such as gardenia, rosemary and silvery vines soften the edges and fill the air with a gentle fragrance, reminding you that nature is the true designer here.
Rinse and repeat
Hidden along the side of the house, the outdoor shower is one of those small luxuries that feels indispensable once you have experienced it. With its weathered metal fixtures, rustic brick backdrop and pebble-lined path, it is equal parts practical and indulgent. Whether rinsing off after a swim or cooling down after a long walk, this little corner captures the essence of coastal living: simple, refreshing and beautifully connected to the land.
Dive in
Just steps away, the heated pool glistens like glass in the shifting light. Its clean lines and simple form keep the focus on the view of marsh grass, mossy oaks and sky.
