Mahjong Hand of the Month (July): Can You Spot All 4 Winning Hands?

Mahjong hand of the month: July mid-game strategy

We’re shaking things up this month.

Instead of analyzing a Charleston pass, you’re already deep into the game. The tiles have been exchanged, the walls are moving and now comes one of the most important skills in Mahjong:

Knowing when to pivot.

Take a close look at this hand. Mahjong instructor Jennifer Kenwell of Pink Palmetto Mahjong sees four possible ways to play it.

Can you identify all four?

And if you could only choose one direction, which section of the 2026 card would you pursue?

Mahjong Hand - July 2026

Your move

Before you scroll any further, study the tiles and ask yourself:

  • What section of the card would you play?
  • What is the strongest path to completion?
  • Can you identify all three possible hands?
  • Would you commit or continue to keep options open?

This hand is all about recognizing opportunity before it disappears.

Why pivoting matters

One of the biggest mistakes Mahjong players make is becoming too committed to their original plan.

Strong players constantly reassess their hands as new tiles arrive.

Sometimes the hand you started with isn’t the hand most likely to win.

The ability to pivot can be the difference between calling Mahjong and watching someone else do it first.

The answer

Jennifer’s preferred direction:

Section 2468

While several possibilities exist, the 2468 section provides the strongest and most efficient path forward with the tiles currently in hand.

The key is recognizing how many of the existing tiles already support that section and how few additional tiles are needed to move toward completion.

Can you spot all four possibilities?

The challenge isn’t just identifying the best hand.

It’s seeing every hand that remains available.

When players learn to identify multiple pathways, they become:

  • More flexible
  • Better at defensive play
  • Faster at making decisions
  • More likely to capitalize on favorable draws

Jennifer identifies four potential hands from this position.

The Mahjong takeaway

The best Mahjong players don’t simply follow one path.

They continuously evaluate their options and pivot when the odds improve.

This month’s hand is a great reminder that flexibility often wins games.
