Jokers can be incredibly useful in American Mahjong, but they can’t be used everywhere. This month’s Mahjong Mastery challenge puts your joker knowledge to the test with four different situations.

Before revealing the answer, look at each of the four examples individually.

Ask yourself: Could a joker legally be used in this position?

There’s an important distinction between having a joker available and being allowed to use it in a particular position. Even if you draw the joker you need to declare Mahjong, that doesn’t necessarily make the hand valid.

The jokers shown in the other three examples cannot be used in those positions.

And here’s the part that can trip up players: even if you drew one of those other jokers for Mahjong, it still couldn’t be used in that position.

The rules of the hand still apply.

Why is the Red Dragon joker correct?

Jokers in American Mahjong can substitute for tiles in certain groupings, but they cannot simply replace any tile you’re missing.

In these four examples, the joker used with the Red Dragons is the only one occupying a position where a joker is permitted.

Understanding where a joker can substitute is just as important as knowing when to hold, exchange or play one.

A joker doesn’t make every hand possible

Seeing a joker on your rack can feel like having a wild card that solves everything. But American Mahjong puts limits on how jokers may be used.

That means a joker cannot turn an otherwise invalid combination into a valid hand simply because it gives you the tile you need.

Learning these restrictions can help you read the card more accurately and avoid thinking you have Mahjong when your hand isn’t actually complete.
